Youth Sports Medicine Program Director

Doug Wiesner, ATC

As the program director for youth sports medicine, Doug Wiesner looks out for the health and safety of young athletes all over Kansas City. He manages the Sports Medicine and Performance Center’s relationships with high schools, including the Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley, De Soto and Lansing school districts. Read more.



Blue Valley

Caitlin Truhe, ATC, LAT

Caitlin Truhe joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in August 2014. She is currently the head athletic trainer at Blue Valley High School. Truhe is an integral part of the athletic program at the school. She works closely with coaches and parents to ensure student athletes are prepared to perform at their maximum potential, but most of all that they are safe and injury-free. Read more.


Blue Valley North

John Derington, MS, ATC, LAT

John Derington joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in August 2014. He is the head athletic trainer at Blue Valley North High School. Derington is an integral part of the athletic program at the school. He is at the school every day for practices and on the sidelines of games working directly with all student athletes. He works closely with coaches and parents to ensure athletes can perform at their maximum potential, but most of all that they are safe and injury-free. Read more.

Christy Grimes, MS ED, ATC/L, CSCS

Christy Grimes joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in August 2014. She is currently the head athletic trainer at Blue Valley Northwest High School. Grimes is an integral part of the athletic program at the school and considers herself part of the Huskies family. She is at the school every day for practices and on the sidelines of games working directly with student athletes. Read more.


Blue Valley Southwest

Christopher Poskey, ATC, LAT

Christopher Poskey joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in August 2014. He is the head athletic trainer at Blue Valley Southwest High School. Poskey is an integral part of the athletic program at the school. He works side by side with student athletes, as well as coaches, parents and doctors. His job is to ensure the athletes can perform at their maximum potential, but most of all that they are safe and injury-free. Read more.


Blue Valley West

Tyler Sleeper, MA, ATC, LAT

Tyler Sleeper joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in June 2014. He is currently the head athletic trainer at Blue Valley West High School. Sleeper provides assistance for injuries and also focuses on education. He believes the more prepared athletes, coaches and staff are about injuries, emergency situations and care of athletes, the safer their athletic environment. Read more.


De Soto

Matt Way, MA, LAT, LAT

Matt Way joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in August 2012. He is in his fifth year as the head athletic trainer for De Soto High School. Way, based at the high school Monday-Friday, is devoted to helping all student athletes and non-athletes. He attends all of De Soto’s home sporting events and travels with the football team. He also serves as a preceptor for sports medicine student interns through the University of Kansas, mentoring them and providing hands-on experience. Read more.

Julie Ascher, MEd, LAT, ATC

Julie Ascher joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in July 2015. She is currently the head athletic trainer for Lansing High School. Ascher has been an integral part of the athletic program at the school for five years. She works closely with coaches and parents to ensure student athletes are prepared to perform at their maximum potential. Most of all Ascher ensures athletes are safe and injury-free. Read more.

Clint McAlister, MA, ATC, LAT

Clint McAlister joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in July 2012. He is currently the head athletic trainer at Mill Valley High School. McAlister is an integral part of the school’s athletic program, working closely with coaches, players and parents to keep the athletes safe and healthy. He’s on-site at practices, home contests and road games during the school year, as well as at camps during the summer. Read more.

Dakota Gelsheimer MS ED, ATC, LAT

Dakota Gelsheimer joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in 2017. She’s currently the interim head athletic trainer at Shawnee Mission East High School. Gelsheimer is an integral part of the athletic program at the school. She works alongside the student-athletes, coaches, parents and doctors to ensure athletes can perform at their maximum potential while staying safe and injury-free. Read more.

Kevin Stalsberg, MS, ATC/L

Kevin Stalsberg joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in August 2014. He is currently the head athletic trainer at Shawnee Mission North High School. Dan Fletcher, ATC, LAT

Shawnee Mission South

Sarah Johnson, MS, ATC, LAT, NASM-PES

Sarah Johnson joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in July 2016. She is currently the head athletic trainer at Shawnee Mission South High School. Johnson is an integral part of the athletic program at the school, working on-site at practices, home contests and road games during the school year. She also works at camps during the summer for a variety of sports. She’s not only the first responder for injuries, but she also works closely with coaches and parents on a daily basis to help with injury prevention and performance-enhancing skills. Read more.


Shawnee Mission West

Ryan Sloop, MS, ATC, LAT

Ryan Sloop joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in July 2014. He is currently the head athletic trainer at Shawnee Mission West High School. Sloop is an integral part of the athletic program at the school. He works with athletic injuries, providing evaluation and assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation. Sloop also oversees the return-to-play guidelines and decisions. Read more.
